What is Internet of things? – Internet of Things IoT | How IoT Works?

Internet of Things (IoT) is simply the interconnection via the Internet of computing devices embedded in everyday objects. This enables them to ‘talk’ to each other with or without human intervention. The IoT ecosystem is very huge and is still in the innovative model. It is an ecosystem with various components ranging from communication gateways, devices/sensors to network connectivity, and a management platform all linked through the World Wide Web – the Internet.

The Internet of Things (IoT) describes the network of physical objects—“things”—that are embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies for the purpose of connecting and exchanging data with other devices and systems over the internet. It is predicted that by the end of 2025 there will be over 130 billion interconnected devices to the Internet. This rapid growth will allow people to generate maximum value from data.

How Does Internet of things IoT Work?

IoT works in a very simple but efficient way. Let’s have a look at a simple illustration of the Internet of Things concepts. We will consider a smart day with John, who is a smart waste collector, for example.

John’s smart clock wakes him up by 5:45 AM & triggers his smart water heater & coffee maker.

Next, the smart water heater heats his water to his preferred pre-set temperature while his smart coffee maker brews his coffee.

After having a warm shower & an awesome coffee, he drives to his office.

John on arriving at the smart parking lot checks his smartphone to see an available parking space.

He drives his company’s dustcart & with his smartphone he tracks the waste bins in his city

So, John arrives at a full Smart waste bin & collects the waste.

Benefits of Internet of Things (IoT)

The IoT is a network of smart devices, sensors, and actuators that can interconnect with each other. So, it has got several benefits which include:

Automation and Control: Without human intervention, machines can communicate with each other leading to faster and timely output. This could also mean shorter to market for businesses who may want to utilize this technology in rolling out products and services.

Better Quality of Life: All the applications of this technology culminate in increased comfort, convenience, and better management, thereby improving the quality of life.

Easy Communication: IoT encourages communication between devices. This is popular way of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication.

Efficiency: The machine-to-machine (M2M) interaction provides better efficiency, hence enabling accurate results generation at a very fast and prompt rate.

Applications of IoT And Its Examples

The Internet of Things (IoT) has a lot of real-life applications. They include but not limited to the following:

Smart Home: Examples are a Smart thermostat, Smart water heater, Smart coffee maker, Smart lights, Smart switches, Smart hubs, Smart TVs, Alexa, Smart cameras, etc.

Wearables: Examples are Smart activity tracker, Smart watch, Smart glass, Smart sneakers, etc.

Telecom: Examples include site monitoring, warehouse activities, fleet management, push-to-talk, etc.

Smart City: Examples are Smart waste management, traffic management, grid, parking lot, etc.

IoT Health: Examples are Smart bed, Smart bandages, Emergency response, etc.

With over 30 billion new device installation and connection by 2025, the IoT ecosystem will touch almost every industry channel including telecom, healthcare, smart homes, transportation, insurance, utilities, oil and gas, and so on.
