Cloud storage – Types of Cloud Storage | file storage

Businesses, offices and even private individuals are beginning to adopt cloud storage mechanisms because they are aiming at enlarging their capacity and cutting costs. Cloud storage is a service model in which data is stored, backed up remotely and made available to users over the Internet. Users generally pay for their cloud data storage on a pre-consumption, monthly rate.

Cloud storage

The cloud can store data in the form of text, graphics, photos, video, and music. It has many unique features that make it fantastic for enterprises attempting to compete in the business world of today. A user is sure of the security of data stored in the cloud and there can be multiple access to it if you wish.

How Does Cloud Storage Work?

A user connects to at least one data server through the internet. He/she sends files over the Internet to the data server which forwards the information to multiple servers. The stored data is then accessible through a web-based interface.

It involves a good number of data servers to ensure their availability. So if one server fails, all hope won’t be lost as data has been replicated elsewhere to make it readily available.

Types of Cloud Storage

It includes personal, private, public, and hybrid storage.

Personal cloud storage

This allows users to store several kinds of personal data and is enabled by a network-attached device known as personal cloud drive. The user manages the device and can access it from anywhere via the Internet.

Private cloud storage

Private storage makes use of storage servers on-premises which are under the control of the company that owns them. Like public and data centers, private cloud storage takes advantage of virtual machines. It is usually used by establishments that want the flexibility of cloud storage. People who are security conscious usually prefer taking charge of their own storage systems in the cloud as opposed to using a public cloud. Private clouds are appropriate for users who need customization and more control over their data.

Public cloud storage

The public provides a  storage environment for more than one that is most suited for unstructured data. This type is dominated by Microsoft Azure, Google, Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), Amazon AWS and a host of other enterprises. The infrastructure is owned, managed and maintained by these providers.  Many Providers websites can also be found online.

Hybrid cloud storage

Hybrid cloud type storage involves both the public cloud, private cloud, and data center as an organization prefers. It typically combines resources that are owned and managed by the enterprise with public cloud storage services that are managed by a third party. Enterprises combine the two approaches to balance the need for securing mission-critical assets with the elasticity, scalability and cost advantages public cloud storage provides. This type offers businesses flexibility and more data deployment options.

Nowadays, a greater number of clients choose the hybrid cloud model though it still has some technical, business and management challenges.  Compatibility and good network connectivity are very important factors to consider.
